Steps to Miles Calculator
A step is not a fixed distance. It depends on your height and on whether you are strolling or running, so both are asked for here.
How the math works
Distance = steps x stride length, where stride is your height x a factor from 0.413 for a slow walk to 0.65 for running. Calories = MET value x weight in kg x hours, with METs of 3.5 for walking up to 9.8 for running.
Common questions
- How many steps are in a mile?
- Between about 1,900 and 2,400 walking, depending on height. A 6 ft walker covers a mile in roughly 2,000 steps, a 5 ft 2 walker needs closer to 2,400. Running takes fewer steps because the stride lengthens.
- How far is 10,000 steps?
- Around 4.5 to 5 miles for most adults walking normally, and about 2 hours of walking. The exact figure depends on your height, which is why this asks for it.
- Do I really need 10,000 steps a day?
- The number came from a pedometer brand name in 1965, not from a study. The research since suggests the large gains in mortality risk come between 4,000 and 7,500 steps, with the curve flattening after that.
