Length Converter
Pick the two units and the amount. Every other unit is listed underneath, because the one you want next is usually not the one you picked.
How the math works
Everything converts through the inch: value x (inches per the unit you have) / (inches per the unit you want). The anchor is exact by definition: 1 inch is 25.4 millimeters. From that, a foot is 12 inches, a yard 36, a mile 63,360, and a meter 39.3700787 inches.
Common questions
- How many feet are in a meter?
- About 3.28084 feet, so a meter is a little over three and a quarter feet. Going the other way, a foot is 0.3048 meters exactly.
- Is the inch to millimeter conversion exact?
- Yes. Since 1959 the international inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters, by agreement rather than measurement. Every other US length unit is defined from the inch, so they are all exact too.
- What is the quick way to estimate meters to feet?
- Multiply by three and add ten percent. For 8 meters, that is 24 plus 2.4, giving 26.4 against a true 26.25. It is within half a percent, which is close enough for pacing out a room.
