Square Footage Calculator
Length times width, in whatever unit you measured in. You also get square yards and square meters, and the cost if you know the price per square foot.
How the math works
Area = length x width. Both measurements are converted to feet first, so you can enter one in inches and the other in meters and still get square feet. Square yards are square feet divided by 9, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 x 3 is 9 - not 3.
Common questions
- How do I measure an L-shaped room?
- Split it into rectangles, work out each one, and add them. Do not try to average the two widths - that is how people end up ordering short.
- How many square feet is a 12x12 room?
- 144 square feet, which is 16 square yards. A 10x10 room is 100 square feet.
- Why is a square yard 9 square feet and not 3?
- Because both sides scale. A yard by a yard is 3 feet by 3 feet, which is 9 square feet. The same trap catches people converting square meters.
- Should I include closets?
- For flooring, yes if you are flooring them. For a listing, the usual US convention is finished, heated living space measured to the inside of the exterior walls, which includes closets but not the garage or an unfinished basement.
- How much waste should I allow?
- Ten percent for a straight layout, fifteen for diagonal or herringbone, and more for a room with lots of corners. Buy it all at once so the batch matches.
