How the math works
Whole weeks contribute five working days each (or six on a six-day week), and the leftover days are checked one at a time from the start date, so the answer depends on which weekday you begin on. Holidays are subtracted at the end rather than detected, because public holidays differ by country, state and employer.
Common questions
- What counts as a business day?
- Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Some industries treat Saturday as a working day, which is what the second option covers. Banks and courts almost always mean Monday to Friday.
- Does the start day count?
- No. Counting a span here means the days after the start date up to and including the end date, which is the convention for "within 10 business days". When adding days, day one is the first working day after the start date.
- Why are holidays not filled in automatically?
- Because they depend on where you are and who you work for. Federal holidays, state holidays and company shutdown days are all different lists, so the count is left to you rather than guessed.
- How many working days are in a year?
- About 260 on a five-day week, before holidays. Taking off around 10 public holidays leaves roughly 250, which is the figure most day-rate contracts assume.
