Ordering the right amount
Mulch, gravel, topsoil, sand and river rock are all sold by volume, usually by the cubic yard when delivered and by the cubic foot in bags. Each calculator here takes the length, width and depth of the area and turns it into both, so you can compare a truck load against a stack of bags before you buy.
Depth matters more than people expect. Two inches of mulch on a bed needs only two thirds of what three inches needs, so measure the depth you actually want rather than guessing. Stone and sand are also sold by weight, and the gravel and sand calculators convert yards to tons using a typical density for that material.
For paths and patios, use the paver calculator for the surface and the sand calculator for the bed underneath. For a lawn, the sod calculator counts rolls or pallets, and the topsoil calculator covers the layer that goes down first. Order around 5 to 10 percent extra to cover settling, uneven ground and waste.
