Food and cooking
Servings, portions, baking quantities and what a recipe really needs.
5 calculators
- Recipe Scaling CalculatorEnter what the recipe says and how many people you are actually feeding. Do one ingredient at a time; the scale factor at the bottom applies to all of them.
- Coffee to Water CalculatorCoffee is a ratio, not a scoop. Pick how much you are brewing and how strong you want it, and this gives the dose in grams and in tablespoons.
- Turkey Cooking Time CalculatorWeight sets the roasting time, but the thermometer settles it. The thawing figure is the one people underestimate, so it is worked out here too.
- Rice to Water CalculatorThe ratio changes with the variety, and that is the whole problem. Pick the rice, enter how much you are cooking, and the water comes out.
- Pizza Size CalculatorCompare two pizzas properly. A pizza grows with the square of its width, so the larger one is almost always better value, and this shows by exactly how much.
Cooking by the numbers
The recipe scaling calculator changes an ingredient amount for more or fewer servings, and can switch it to a handier unit. Seasoning and leavening such as salt and baking powder do not always scale evenly, so taste as you go when making a much larger batch.
The rice to water and coffee to water calculators use the ratios cooks rely on, and let you change the ratio if you like your rice softer or your coffee stronger. The pizza size calculator compares pizzas by area, which is how you find out which deal gives the most pizza for the money.
The turkey cooking time calculator gives roasting time by weight. Always check the thickest part of the thigh with a thermometer: it should read 165°F (74°C) before serving.
